Ciasna is a cave situated between two nameless gorges in Sąspowska Valley. Work that we have planned to do here required just a few days, so we’ve decided to do it in 2018.

Excavations in Ciasna cave progressed quickly. Partly because we could drive our car near the cave and transport of bags with soil was very easy and quick. Just two days took us opening small trench in the corner of the old trench of prof. Chmielewski, and reaching its bottom. Next we widened the trench and explored layers in situ.

Basically that should be the end of our excavations in Ciasna. But our curiosity wouldn’t let us leave without checking what is inside of the cave. Ciasna is filled with soil and leafs almost to the ceiling. The cave has two openings, which according to plans are connected by a corridor over a dozen metres long. After hearing local stories about people using caves in XXth century, we decided to explore it. After crawling inside it became clear to us, that old plans don’t really portray reality. Cave is probably much bigger than previously thought. We did a small trench inside. It was a real challenge, limited space forced us to dig while lying on the ground with spiders hanging just above our heads 😉

Participation in our project guarantee extremal experiences, even in free time we don’t miss a chance to explore unknown parts of archaeological sites. Phot. Małgorzata Kot

Excavations in Ciasna cave ended our 2018 season. Now is the time to work on the materials we found.
